I wholeheartedly Support Proposition 58

Proposition 58 would replace education laws that make it difficult for limited English children to learn things like math, science and history in school and replaces tghem with a law that will make it much easier for them to learn these subjects.

According to California’s Legislative Analyst, current state law requires that ALL children in California public schools MUST be taught in English. That word all means that even children who understand very little English must be taught things like math, science and history IN ENGLISH.

In a minute I will try to teach you three things in languages that you don’t understand and then give you a quiz to see if you learned what I taught you. That should help you understand how wrong this current law is.

Why I Will Vote Anyway

Black Votes Count Too
Black Votes Count Too!

To be perfectly honest, I have a pretty low opinion of both Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump.

I was really a Bernie Sanders supporter. I think he really cares about the things I care about. And I think, if elected President, he would have fought hard to accomplish those things. I have doubts that Hillary Clinton will do that. But the thought that Donald Trump might become President absolutely terrifies me.

Still there are reasons why, even people like me, should vote on November 8.

Another Reason To Vote For Proposition 60

Black Votes Count Too
Black Votes Count Too!

Proposition 60 is the proposition that would require performers in adult films to wear condoms when performing sex acts on camera. You can see what I said previously on Prop 60 by scrolling down to my previous post on this issue.

So what is the new reason? More cases of sexually transmitted diseases were reported last year than ever before, according to the US Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Please Vote For Proposition 52

Black Votes Count Too

I will vote for Proposition 52 because it will assure that California will continue to receive substantial funding from the federal government to help us pay for essential medical care given by hospitals to people on limited income in our state.

This care is paid for through a program called Medicaid. California’s version of Medicaid is called Medi-Cal. Proposition 52 will also reduce the cost of this care that comes out of your pocket and mine. To find out how:

Legalize Marijuana Vote For Proposition 64

Black Votes Count Too
Black Votes Count Too!

Proposition 64 would allow adults aged 21 years old or older to possess and use marijuana for recreational purposes.

It would create two new taxes, one levied on cultivation and the other on retail price. Revenue from the taxes would be spent on drug research, treatment, and enforcement, health and safety grants addressing marijuana, youth programs, and preventing environmental damage resulting from illegal marijuana production.

A recent study done by the ACLU and Human Rights Watch provides vivid evidence of at least one reason we should legalize the recreational use of Marijuana by voting for Proposition 64.

The study found that roughly the same number of African Americans and Whites smoke small amounts of marijuana, but African Americans are arrested, AND PROSECUTED, far more often than Whites.

We have been hearing about, and seeing cell phone recordings of, a limited number of police shootings of Black men across the country. Many people say most police officers are good people and the killings were done by just a few rogue cops. However, the data in the ACLU report provides evidence that police discrimination against Blacks is wide spread.

The study found that Whites and African Americans smoke marijuana at roughly the same rates. However, Blacks were more than 4 times more likely to be arrested.

The report suggested one reason for this may be that Whites mostly use marijuana indoors while Blacks usually use it on the street. So it is easier to arrest Black users.

We can stamp out one widespread practice of police discrimination against African Americans by legalizing the use of small amounts of marijuana for recreational purposes. Proposition 64 will do that. So I will vote for Proposition 64. I hope you will as well.

Please Protect Porn Actors

Black Votes Count Too
Black Votes Count Too!

My parents would have been uncomfortable discussing pornographic films. My great Aunt Margaret would have been shocked that the subject was even mentioned.

But the actors in these movies are really just workers, like workers in any other industry. And California, and the US, have a long, and admirable, history of establishing work place standards to protect the health and safety of workers. That is what Proposition 60 would do for workers in porn films. Prop 60 will be on the ballot on November 8. I will be voting for it, and I hope you will too.

Basically, Proposition 60 clarifies state law by specifically requiring the use of condoms during scenes of sexual intercourse in adult films. It also requires film makers, distributors and talent agents to take several steps (such as registering with the state, telling the state when they are going to shoot a new film, etc) that are meant to assure that they actually abide by this rule.

Some people say we now have PreEP pills. If taken every day they reduce the chance of getting HIV/AIDS by 90%. So condoms aren’t needed. The PreEP medicines are great, but some poor soul will be in the 10%. And with condoms the chance of getting HIV is close to zero. Also, the PreEP pills do not protect people against Syphilis, Gonorrhea or Hepatitis.

In August of this year, both the California Division of Occupational Health and Safety (CalOSHA), and the California Occupational Standards and Health Board, issued reports saying condom use is essential in protecting adult film workers from sexually transmitted diseases.

The porn industry says condoms aren’t needed because they regularly test their actors for sexually transmitted diseases and don’t use actors who are sick. But CalOSHA staff note that many sexually transmitted diseases exist for many weeks before they can be discovered by testing. So many people can infect others during those weeks.

Some say forcing the use of condoms violates the adult film industry’s First Amendment right to freedom of expression! Condoms in adult films do NOT violate free speech. In 2014, the US Ninth Circuit of Appeals rejected the adult film industry’s First Amendment claims and upheld the constitutionality of requiring condoms in adult films.

Some say Prop 60 isn’t needed because most porn film actors do wear condoms when filming. But Rand Martin, who is an AIDS lobbyist (and has been for almost 30 years), says that is only partly true. Most actors in gay porn films do use condoms. But they are rarely used in straight porn.

Some say, if we impose these new regulations, the adult film industry will leave the state. That’s not likely. The only other state that allows the filming of porn movies is New Hampshire. Porn film makers are unlikely to leave the movie capital of the world for New Hampshire.

All through my working life I was protected by rules and regulations designed to keep me safe and healthy at my work place. I’m sure the same is true for you. Adult film actors deserve the same protections, So I will vote for Proposition 60. I hope you will too.
